Signs of Spring in Providence, RI April 22, 2008

The initial sign of spring is the lengthening of the daylight. I am definitely a spring/summer person and I love the daylight as much as the darkness, but I think I love daylight a little more.

Another sign is the temperature gradually rising from a daytime high of the low 50’s up into the 70’s and 80’s. It’s been absolutely gorgeous here since last Friday and it is showing no signs of changing. We haven’t seen any snow since late February, or at least any accumulation thereof.

Then there are the spring blooms. There are flowers on a lot of the trees in my neighborhood, the grass takes on a brighter shade of green, and flowers starting poking out of the ground. Take a look in my flickr photo set on the right for examples.

The other ubiquitous sign of spring is the roadkill. Today I saw an interesting one, it was a rather large rat. But I have to tell cat owners, keep your cats indoors. I’ve seen so many young cats on the streets lately, none dead thus far but I know that’s only a matter of time. An indoor cat has a lifespan ranging from 12 to 20 years, and outdoor or indoor/outdoor cat rarely makes it to 10 years.

Speaking of Felix Catus check out this owners manual for a cat. It’s pretty cool if you’ve never had a cat and are thinking about adopting one.

That’s the other thing about spring, shortly you’ll see a whole new batch of kittens and puppies.
