Moving ahead in Providence June 13, 2009

Some new features are popping up on traffic signals in the city.

Cross walks include countdown timers visible to the pedestrians.

The signals have better traffic sensing capabilities.

The signals can now be triggered by emergency vehicles to allow priority access.

But best of all, the signals are adaptable because they can tie in to the MESH network in the city.

These are all benefits of the ITS system being implemented all over the U.S. right now. Better pedestrian access, better traffic management. Really quite stunning, all due to the rise of the computer, or more accurately the embedded microprocessor.

I love those crosswalks with the countdown on them!
