Someone finally answers the question – What can government do correctly? August 14, 2009

Check out this post on the Daily Kos. Yes yes, I know. It is a very liberal site but it jibes with my political view of the world.

The best part of the article is the last paragraph:

The only reason government doesn’t work is because conservative Republican administrations defunded and/or patronage staffed them with people with ties to special business interests: to wit the last FDA, Dept of Interior and Agriculture under Bush. No one seems to have a problem with pumping over $500Bil to the Defense Department which last I hear is a socialized entity.

The military budget when you include the debacle in Iraq and Afghanistan is well over a trillion a year. I keep seeing numbers thrown out that the health care public option would cost something likes $x billion over ten years. Note that last part, over ten years. When it comes down to it, it’s a couple billion a year. I think we could stop the misadventure in Iraq, bring our men home, and shave off a cool $100 Billion a year from the military budget and use that to create a single payer health system, use it to restore funding to PBS and NPR. Use it to beef up educational facilities and more importantly curriculum.

Give us professionals whose main job isn’t lobbyist for company x, but leading scientist at a university lab studying environment, biology, etc. In other words, give us the grown ups because the Republicans are nothing more than spoiled petulant children/crybabies.

And yes, government can do health care. Or is the success of Medicare (Which Bush screwed with with the whole Part D debacle) or even the VA System (You cannot bring up Walter Reed, that is a U.S. Army facility).

Finally a message to President Obama and the congressional Democrats. Move this bill or suffer our wrath in 2010 and on. Stop kowtowing to the Republicans. They lost, you won.

And to the Republicans – as I said stop acting like children. Your constituents aren’t stupid and they see you for you obstructionist crap.

Finally to the health care giants, we know you’re putting people up to these shout-down your representative events otherwise known as Town Halls.
