This evening, October 15, 2009 at 7PM the Massachusetts Family Institute had an event at the Newton, MA Marriott hotel.
I was there with members of the Providence Equality Action Committee (PEAC). At one point during our protest an MFI photographer came out and took photographs of us. I plan to monitor the web and file a DMCA complaint once the picture go up. Meanwhile I’ve got a few pics of the event that I took. You can see them over in the flickr sidebar.
About 13 people from PEAC showed up, and 2 members of Queer Action Rhode Island (QuARI) attended.
We got a few supportive honks from people on Comm Ave. This was of course after we were asked to leave the property by someone who wasn’t even a Marriott employee. It was one of the MFI bigots. And of course the first words out of his mouth were “This is private property and I’ll call the police…”
I have a message for him. The hotel is a public accommodation. And in MA public spaces have serious 1st amendment protections. I wish I had thought of that when we were there. As it was Newton police did at least 5 drive bys in the hour of time that we were actually on Comm Ave. They’d pull into the Marriott lot and then pull back out. Nice little attempt at intimidation. But it was lost on the group. I noticed it but didn’t say anything.
As it was one of the call outs was “Back of the bus” to which we answered “Hell No!” then “Governor Carcieri” to which we answered “Fuck you!”
(Here we see the species Asholicus Governus, RI Governor Donald “The Asshole” Carcieri. The governor needs to lock his elbow, turn the palm downwards and raise his arm to about a 40 degree angle off center to get the correct ‘salute’.)
Another set of call outs was answered with “Tear it down” with the call being DADT, DOMA, MFI, Carcieri, et al.
I will mention that it was just cold enough to be likened to a witches tit in a brass bra. But we’re hardy people, and committed.
We’re going to push full equality forward in RI whether the bigots like it or not. I even advised MERI that I found 250 members in Governor Carcieri’s district, and maybe we should have them take advantage of his open door Thursdays. I figure we can go for about a solid six months.
One of the side benefits of districting the supporter lists is that we have enough supporters for equality in the state that we could be a very influential force in politics.
Here is a little video of the event. It goes light to dark unfortunately. I’ve got to rig up a battery powered lighting system for night usage.
